Spyware and adware are sometimes, or
most of the time, used to describe the same thing. There are
some differences.
Adware is an Internet advertiser that thinks it would be
nice to plant a tracking cookie on your computer. This draws
in more advertising from the Internet causing pop-ups,
machine slow down, and machine lock-up.
Spyware is some
software program that is download onto your computer.
Sometimes it is downloaded automatically. Sometimes it is
disguised as a useful utility and download by the
computer user. The program runs on your computer tracking
your every move on the Internet. Then sending you advertisements and pop-ups
with the content you have been viewing on the Internet.
Examples of Spyware are any toolbar add-on to your Internet
Explorer, (Google or Yahoo toolbar). Others are Spyware
cleaners (Spy Doctor, PCTools, Spy Sheriff).
Virus
attacks are more serious. Much like adware or Spyware except
that a virus will many times be destructive. From causing
minor inconvenience to completely disabling your computer. A
virus has no apparent reason except for causing problems.
